Nuovo centro scolastico, civico e sportivo | biassono, italy
The whole complex is governed by the geometry of the honeycomb, namely the hexagonal shape.
Bees use mathematics and geometry to build their hives. Why did bees “choose” the hexagonal shape? Hexagons allow efficient use of space, maximizing storage and minimizing material waste. Bees teach us the importance of teamwork, focus on goals, effective leadership, division of labor, organization and experience.
The civic center consists of covered (library, auditorium, cafeteria) and uncovered (agora) areas that demonstrate, in their mutual relationships, the efficiency of hexagonal geometry in designing and controlling different functions at the same time. The same can also be said for the volume of the gymnasium whose two ‘prows’ to the north as well as to the south become moments of experiential socialization under a grand sculptural gesture: a large roof of laminated beams expressing the strength of hexagonal geometry draw a large coffered ceiling expressing a sense of belonging.
